Description

I'a! I'a! Cthulhu fhtagn!

"Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn." -- "In his house at R'lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming."

"That is not dead which can eternal lie.
And with strange aeons even death may die."

"...Then mankind would have become as the Great Old Ones; free and wild and beyond good and evil, with laws and morals thrown aside and all men shouting and killing and reveling in joy. Then the liberated Old Ones would teach them new ways to shout and kill and revel and enjoy themselves, and all the earth would flame with a holocaust of ecstasy and freedom."

"It represented a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind. This thing, which seemed instinct with a fearsome and unnatural malignancy, was of a somewhat bloated corpulence, and squatted evilly on a rectangular block or pedestal covered with undecipherable characters."

"A mountain walked or stumbled. Oh God!"

--The Call of Cthulhu

H.P. Lovecraft is regarded by many to have been the greatest horror writer who ever lived. I agree. No one could send a chill down your spine the way he could. The beauty of his work is that its the exact opposite of all the horror movies you see today. Lovecraft was the master of suggestion, it was all about what wasn't jumping out of the shadows but what was malevolently waiting in the shadows that you couldn't see. Insanity, monsters, vast gulfs of time and space, and cosmic horrors unable to be comprehended by frail human minds, Lovecraft created a rich world that other writers have played in for decades after his passing(myself included).

Well, turns out Cthulhu doesn't have to be evil. [link]
